Towards Teaching music in French primary schools. This article describes and analyses how teachers in primary schools teach music. The survey concerned more than one thousand teachers and it shows on the one hand the conformity of the teachers'statements with the regulations from the Ministry of Education and on the other end, the large variety in the time that is devoted to musical activities. Amongst those singing is the most frequent and teachers themselves generally lead lessons. Besides, teaching practises are more intensive and varied in pre-schools than in primary schools and when teachers have a professionel training.

The idea that "music makes you smarter" and promotes verbal skills (Ho et al., 2003; Forgeard and al. 2000), spatiotemporal capacities (Rauscher and Zupan 2000) or even the QI (Schellenberg 2006) has received attention from general public and researchers. In this study we examined the effects of music training on pre-school and school performance of kindergarten children, in particular the early writing skills.
